This is a repeat – I just added the gift posts that have appeared since the last Nifty Gifties Retrospective.

Handmade gifts are the best! Here’s a list of the Nifty Gifties that have appeared on The Reluctant Hippie in the past. Hope you can find some inspiration for the folks on your list!

Light Friday: Just say “No” to Black Friday

I hate Black Friday. I could say that it’s because Black Friday is the embodiment of all that is wrong with society today. Or because big corporations are evil. Or because we shouldn’t go straight from counting our blessings on Thanksgiving to chasing luxuries the following day. But honestly? I just find Black Friday exhausting. Continue reading

Money Flowers

Money flowers {The Reluctant Hippie}

Are you looking for a fun way to give a cash gift? This tutorial courtesy of Origami did such a good job explaining the paper folds, even *I* could accomplish the origami. And believe me – that is saying something.

The first flower takes a few minutes. The rest come together in a flash. I used floral wire because I had some, but any kind of twistable wire or even a pipe cleaner would work just fine. The floral tape to wrap the wire was kind of great – it made the wires look a lot like real flower stems. I wrapped all three stems together towards the bottoms so that the arrangement stayed put. You can absolutely do this without floral tape, but it really makes the finished product look terrific. Any craft store will have it. I got mine at Dollar Tree a few years ago.

This project came together very simply and relatively quickly. It’s a nice way to give cash without just shoving it into a card. It’s also a nice alternative for sending flowers to someone who could find a better use for your $50 than an FTD arrangement. Hope your gift recipient enjoys the beautiful fruits of your labor!

Splash bombs (reusable water balloons)

Splash Bombs (Reusable Water Balloons) {The Reluctant Hippie}

You know what sucks about water balloons? Everything except for the 4.2 seconds during which the balloon is launched and exploded. First, you have to fill each balloon and tie each balloon. Then, after the fun is over, you have to hunt down hundreds of pieces of brightly colored balloon shrapnel strewn about your yard. They waste time and materials. The scraps are dangerous for babies and wildlife.

I hate water balloons. But I also love playing with them, and so do my kids. I started looking for an alternative.  Continue reading
