Cough Balm

Cough Balm {The Reluctant Hippie}

Between allergies and cold/flu season, it seems like someone at our house always has a little bit of a cough. A spoonful of this “tea” stirred into a cup of hot water calms the cough and helps loosen congestion. Continue reading

‘Tis the season for lots of parties. Here is a compilation of my favorite dishes and drinks to share!

Caramelized Onion Dip {The Reluctant Hippie}

Caramelized Onion Dip: Skip the packet of onion soup mix and make this real-food version instead.

Teton Tea

Teton Tea (The Reluctant Hippie}A high of 6 degrees? Snow?? What is this, February!?!

This seasonally-appropriate weather is killing me. The mild winter had lulled us into a false sense of Californianism. As the temperatures dipped below freezing this past week and then had the audacity to stay there, we broke out a drink recipe that I’ve been meaning to try.

This recipe for Teton Tea comes from The Wildflower Inn in Jackson Hole, Wyoming. It was published in Jackson Hole Cooks, edited by Rebecca Woods.

This hot cup of happiness is especially great after shoveling the sidewalk or when you have a scratchy throat. It’s wicked simple, and it was universally loved at our house. Continue reading

Grab & Go Green Smoothies

Grab & Go Smoothies {The Reluctant Hippie}

I returned to work this fall. Not full-time yet, but enough hours in the week to put us into a situation where we are managing child care, extra-curriculars, 2 parents’ jobs, and keeping everything humming along smoothly. In the past, this has been a recipe for disaster in terms of nutrition. Continue reading

FrankenSmoothies {The Reluctant Hippie}

We’ve tried green smoothies multiple times, and the kids would never give them a fair shake because of the appearance. It’s impossible to incorporate greens into smoothies without turning them green, or grey at the very least.

When I saw the green pudding cups with Frankenstein’s monster drawn on the outside, I thought that maybe I could sneak in green smoothies under the guise of spookiness in October. Continue reading

Select-a-Size Margarita Cubes

Select-a-Size Margarita Cubes {The Reluctant Hippie}

On a recent vacation to the UP, I discovered day drinking. It’s lovely! The Hippie Husband mixed up a pitcher of margaritas and just kept refilling everyone’s glasses.

A discussion ensued of the merits of fresh ingredients vs. store-bought margarita mix. We all agreed that the fresh pitcher was far superior, but our friend Marina noted that sometimes, only one person wants a drink after work. Juicing the limes and mixing the ingredients seems like an awful lot of work for a single drink. And making a whole pitcher for an average Thursday seems an awful lot like alcoholism.

Drunken brilliance flashed into my mind, and a few weeks later, I juiced the limes, simmered the syrup, and made a batch of margarita mix. I then poured it into ice cube trays, froze them, and calculated the proportions for perfect select-a-size margaritas. Continue reading
